چکیده

SonicData is a technique for broadcasting data to smartphones via audio streams using phone’s built-in microphone. SonicData augments an audio stream in the environment with nearly inaudible high-frequencies, allowing data to be sent to any smartphone in the vicinity using regular speakers and without any need for special hardware and software infrastructure or handshaking requirements. We detail the technical implementation of the SonicData prototype, outline a technical evaluation of its capabilities, and describe the results of a preliminary study of its effect on the quality of sound streams. We designed four interaction techniques that highlight SonicData’s potential as a complementary technique for broadcasting data to smartphones. Author

Designing a Sustainable Noise Mapping System Based on Citizen Scientists Smartphone Sensor Data

In this study, we attempted to assess the feasibility of collecting population health data via mobile devices. Specifically, we constructed noise maps based on sound information monitored by individuals' smartphones. We designed a sustainable way of creating noise maps that can overcome the shortcomings of existing station-based noise-monitoring systems. Three hundred and nine Seoul residents a...

Acoustic data transmission to collaborating smartphones - An experimental study

The acoustic capabilities (i.e. microphone) and the fast processors of modern smartphones allow for the transmission of data to groups of such devices through the audio channel. We discuss an acoustic data transmission system for broadcast communication to a multitude of smartphones without the need of a radio access point. Acoustic data transmission is particularly attractive in scenarios that...

Like, Share, Recommend: Smartphones as a Self-Broadcast and Self-Promotion Medium of College Students

In this study, the authors examine the use of smart phones for self-broadcasting among college students based on motivation and network externalities theories. The authors propose that smartphones have changed telephones from a point-to-point interpersonal medium to a broadcast medium for individuals to disseminate information to their networks through the use of social media. The authors hypot...

A new method for acquisition and analysis of single unit recording data

Single unit recording has been used as a well-known technique to study the electrical behavior of neurons. In this respect, the classical methods are rather expensive. In this study a simple and inexpensive method for single unit recording studies has been introduced. Computer sound card was used for data acquisition. Neural responses were saved via simple sound applicable packages and then ana...

ChirpCast: Data Transmission via Audio

In this paper we present ChirpCast, a system for broadcasting network access keys to laptops ultrasonically. This work explores several modulation techniques for sending and receiving data using sound waves through commodity speakers and built-in laptop microphones. Requiring only that laptop users run a small application, the system successfully provides robust room-specific broadcasting at da...
